* O-Higan is a Buddhist holiday celebrated in Japan during both the Spring and Autumnal Equinox. It is observed by nearly every Buddhist sect in Japan. The tradition extends from mild weather that occurs during the time of equinoxes. People who normally must work in the field had more leisure time to evaluate their own practices, and to make a renewed effort to follow Buddhism. Today, special services are usually observed in Japanese Buddhist temples, and Japanese temples abroad, based on the particular Buddhist tradition or sect. The etymology of higan means "The Other Shore", which is a common euphemism used in Buddhist literature to refer to Enlightenment. One crosses this shore of ignorance and suffering to the other shore of Enlightenment and peace.

How I see myself in one year...
a poem by Sangha elder Zac Lange

I love my little life and those, who around,
care and love me
I believe in one year
I will be out and about in my community,
Doing what, I am not sure (as of yet...)
But my belief and true soul's feeling
Is it will be in a way to positively touch upon others
Perhaps even assisting them in some way
I do believe in the teachings of the Buddha
And am now, truly living by them

I believe in one year
I will be holding a weekly service, as a Lay Minister!
I will receive the training required
From my dear and good friend, Kanjin
Whom is a wise, and very, very patient man himself!
I will be planning my days, as I do now
But in a more productive fashion
To assist myself and too my loving and lifesaving mother in
general all around our house
Cutting our lawn more frequently
preparing dinner for both of us
If not every night, then close

Yes, in one year I will be free!
With my loving and caring true and peaceful soul!
Flying through the universe!
Encapsulated on this little, up, down and all around planet.
Doing what I can to assist, care
and I believe love all I can around me!!!

I do hope I meet you!

Sangha Elder Zac Lange is recovering from an accident that caused severe brain trauma. Thanks to his hard work and effort and that of his mother Wilhelmina Lange and his teacher Rev. Cederman his prospects for recovery seem to be very bright.

Declaration of the State of Affairs in Myanmar

By Rev. Joshin Komatsu, Chief Administrator
Nichiren Shu Buddhist Order in Japan

Based on the spirit that our founder, Nichiren Shonin, expressed in his "Treatise on Spreading Peace Throughout the Country by Establishing the True Dharma," the Nichiren Shu Buddhist order in Japan has been for seven centuries spreading Sakyamuni Buddah's teaching of The Lotus Sutra, chanting its title (Daimoku) as the practical way of realization of the Buddha Land in this world, peace and tranquility of the entire world. The Nichiren Shu order of Buddhism is shocked by the use of armed force by the government of Myanmar against its Buddhist priests and citizens. We cannot help expressing our deep anxiety and indignation upon the news report that citizens of Myanmar including Buddhist priests were shot to death. We urge the government of Myanmar to immediately stop the use of arms and to work in a peaceful manner to solve the problem.  We also urgently request that the Japanese government , the United nations and other international organizations to do their best to solve the problem in Myanmar peacefully.

October 1, 2007

This Sangha also strongly condems the actions being perpetrated by the government of Myanmar. We urge the United States Government and the Governments of Canada and Mexico to act quickly to end these atrocities by passing legislation against the government of Myanmar and putting the full might of their diplomatic corps to work in the United Nations to put pressure on other countries to do the same.
